The Ria Formosa Lagoon and Cabanas de Tavira beaches: a birdwatching destination of note

Book your stay at the Golden Club Cabanas Resort in September to see small terrestrial migrant birds, as a huge diversity can be easily spotted as the summer comes to an end.

Autumn promises sightings of long-billed sandpipers, red knots and ruffs all passing through the area, as well as water birds such as Eurasian wigeons, Northern shovelers and diving ducks.

With winter comes sightings of oystercatchers, pied avocets, dunlins and little stints in the wettest, muddiest areas. It is also a great time to see flamingos, glossy ibis, black-winged kites and bluethroats, as well as popular Eurasian penduline tits and slender-billed gulls, which can be found on the banks of the Ria Formosa Lagoon.
