Tavira is one of the most charming towns in the Algarve. Famous for its rich religious heritage, the typical hipped roofs, the “old bridge” over the Gilão River and the strong Mediterranean heritage, the city offers history, culture and landscape in generous doses. Ancient Bridge (the “Roman Bridge”)

The city’s greatest symbol, the bridge connects the two banks of the Gilão River and has been rebuilt over the centuries; Studies point to medieval origin and the current aspect was consolidated in the century. After the floods of 1989, it became pedestrian only.
Tip: in summer, rowing tours in Gilão are a quiet way to see the riverside houses.
Jardim do Coreto

The oldest public garden in Tavira, with an iron bandstand from the end of the century. Manufactured in Porto and installed in 1890. In the summer it usually hosts activities for families.
Ribeira Market
Nineteenth-century stone and iron building that functioned as a municipal market until 1999. Today it is a multipurpose space with restaurants, shops and cultural events.
Tavira Castle

Conquered from the Muslims in the mid-century. XIII, offers gardens and a beautiful panoramic view over the city. The walls have been classified as a National Monument since 1939 (expanded classification in 2014).
Tip: the times vary by season — confirm at the tourist office (Praça da República) during the tour.
Church of Santa Maria do Castelo

Next to the castle, it stands over an old mosque (century. XIII) and maintains the famous clock tower, of primitive construction (with later decorative additions).

Church of Mercy
Masterpiece of the Algarve Renaissance (1541–1551) attributed to André Pilarte, with a remarkable portal and interiors enriched by eighteenth-century carvings and tiles.
Fado with History
Alongside Misericórdia, a show that presents (and explains) Fado with Portuguese guitar. Check updated schedules on the official website before visiting.
Tavira Tower (Tavira Eye)

Old water tank transformed into a camera obscura: a ~30-minute guided tour with 360º real-time views over Tavira — guaranteed success with kids and adults alike. Check the schedules on the website.
Islamic Museum Center
Opened in 2012, it brings together the most important Islamic collection in the city, including the famous Vase of Tavira.
Hours (current): Tue–Sat, 10:00–13:00 and 14:00–18:00; closed Sun/Mon/holidays.
Salinas de Tavira

“Open-air laboratory” of the Ria Formosa, where the artisanal harvest of fleur de sel is preserved. The Rui Simeão brand warehouse/store is a sure visit to learn about the process and take a gastronomic souvenir; The area is also excellent for birdwatching.
