Discover the natural beauty of Pego do Inferno

Considered one of the most beautiful natural wonders in the Algarve, Pego do Inferno is located in the parish of Santo Estêvão, about 7 km from Tavira and approximately 13 km from Golden Club Cabanas. This is one of many waterfalls found along the Asseca Stream, one of the main watercourses in the Tavira region. When on holiday in the Algarve, this wonderful little secret is one certainly not to be missed.

One of the highlights of the route is the Pego Viewpoint. Standing up high, visitors can take in the tranquillity of the waterfall, go for a dip in summer or delight in the force of nature during the winter.

The Legend of the Pego do Inferno

Legend has it that, many years ago, a cart drove off the Pego, taking all the people in it plunging into the pool below. The people driving the cart and the animals pulling it were never seen or heard from again. It is also said that the people never reached the bottom of the plunge pool, which led to it gaining its name: Pego do Inferno (Hellish Pool).

Historically, the location was not very well known or advertised, which meant only the locals got to experience its wonders, naming it the “hidden pearl”.

The waterfall cascades into a round Mediterranean green plunge pool – a colour gained due to the depth of the pool and the colours of the surrounding landscape and vegetation. A 100% natural area, it is surrounded by trees and bushes. As such, its natural beauty must be preserved.Visitors are therefore urged not to pollute the lagoon and its surroundings, leaving as small an ecological footprint as possible on their way through.
