The Algarve region has a strong culinary tradition and rich cuisine, with many of the region’s sweet treats making excellent use of locally-grown Algarve almonds. Algarve Marzipan Figures

The best known and most sought-after indulgence, both in Portugal and abroad, marzipan figures certainly get mouths watering with their appealing colours and unique shapes. Coming in shapes and sizes from animals to fruits and vegetables, these delicacies are made of modelled marzipan paste – a combination of almonds, sugar and egg whites.

Dom Rodrigo

Carefully wrapped in coloured foil and made using egg threads, “ovos moles” (eggs and sugar) and grated almond topped with a drizzle of sugar syrup, these delicious parcels of joy are irresistible!

This cake combines two of the Algarve’s most traditional flavours: orange and almond. And it’s a must next time you’re on holiday in Tavira.

Olhão Folar Sweet Bread

One of the 7 Sweet Wonders of Portugal, Olhão folar bread is sure to delight anyone visiting the Algarve, whether at Easter or any other time of year. The circular dough is layered into a cake tin with butter, sugar and cinnamon syrup ladled in between each layer.

Algarve Trio Cake

The clue’s in the name for this one, with the “trio” being made up of three ingredients that could not be more complementary: carob, fig, and, of course, almond. This cake is also known as the Cake of Three Delights – and we wonder why that could be 🙂
